Additional Singles 1969-1981 Information

This revamped version of the Carpenters' two original Singles LPs may, despite the absence of some TopĀ 40 charters, stand as the definitive single-CD collection of the duo's hits. Included are most of the reasons Karen Carpenter's bring-the-pain vocals are still revered by thrift-shopping college kids and their moms alike. Despite the act's squeaky-clean image, Karen was of course more than touched by tragedy; at least one of the more hopeful of these tunes, "For All We Know," has doubt built right into its title. The best of this is smart, cry-in-your-Evian pop that sounds a lot less dated than it might in your memory. "Close to You" and "Hurting Each Other" are actually soulful claims on their then-new soft-pop tradition, while the towering "Goodbye to Love" is worthy of Rumours-era Christine McVie. Despite some duds, mostly from its later period, 1969-1981 makes its case for this enduring and sometimes classic outfit. --Rickey Wright

What Customers Say About Singles 1969-1981:

Jeez, I must have at least 5 or 6 Carpenters Greatest Hits in one form or another, and I know some poor souls out there prob have ALL of the Carpenters reissues on CD.I have a very good suggestion and I'm gonna put this directly to Richard Carpenter (so hope you're listening, Richard) -- I speak for a lot of Carp Fans out there when I say to PLEASE give us something different starting from this point forward. I see it maybe once in a blue moon where it lists for $30 on EBay. As much as I love the Carpenters -- and I LOVE them very much -- I'm starting to get a little tired by the endless and relentless reissues of Carpenters "Greatest Hits" and "More Greatest Hits" and "Greatest Hits Part 3" and so on.get the point. I know we would all just die and go to heaven if someday (maybe in year 2010). You know that would make us all the more appreciative of your talents and miss Karen all the more. So, Richard.if you're listening and watching, how about adding this "Special Request" to your memo and see if a special Carpenters release might be in store for 2010. I was thinking maybe you could obtain the rights to some of your past LIVE performances that you & Karen performed overseas where you guys were EXTREMELY Popular. I know that would just make a great Thanksgiving present and Christmas gift, especially on Amazon where it would sell like HOTCAKES.There already exists one Carpenters Live album "Carpenters - Live From London" issued on vinyl in 1976 and prob reissued on CD, but good luck if you try to find it.

What about reissuing your TV specials where Karen sang with a lot of special guests like jazz great Ella Fitzgerald and issue those live performances on CD. I know I'm not alone when I say we Carpenters Fans already have these tracks in one form or another. Is it possible to maybe even reissue that performance on CD again at a much more AFFORDABLE price. I know you guys performed live in places like Japan and Europe and a lot of those performances were taped, so those live tracks are available and probably collecting dust in some vault in a storage room somewhere. if you could issue a disc of previously unreleased rare and live tracks. Again, that would just be DA BOMB. Perhaps our Christmas stocking would be all the merrier and cheerier if this CD ever comes out.Thanks.

This CD is everything I had hoped it would be. All of my personal Carpenter favorites are included & the sound quality is great. It truly brings back memories just as is expressed in the song, "Yesterday Once More. Thanks.

Sometimes either you make it yourself, or learn to make misery bearable."Those old melodies still sound so good to me as they melt the years away." (Yesterday Once More)I suppose that the musician died too young, that she somehow was emotionally hardened, being able to peal out scenarios like "Good bye to Love" , or a cover of the Beatles, "Gotta Ticket To Ride", or "All You Get From Love is a Love Song." But the Carpenters also gave us so many fun songs, tender love ballads and just plain beautiful melodies. And for all of the happiness of that song, I remember singing it sometimes through a huge lump in my throat.

}:-) If I have got a glazed look in my eyes when Karen sings, well, her voice may be an old love song gone for much too long. Or at the very least, a love song from an old soul.

Like an old love song, gone for much too long, you hear it once again and it carries you away.I wouldn't want to have to tell anyone, "This is your parent's music." But I realize there's a substantial probability it really may be. `By the time I was in High School I remember Karen Carpenter teaming up with Sesame Street and the Big Bird for the cut, "Sing".

(Those Good Old Dreams) With Karen's melancholy legato carrying us off to "Long ago & far away" as she falls in love during a concert, (Super Star) I can't help remembering child-hood friends when we were kidlets.Summer bicycle ventures into the nearby village to divest ourselves of recycling bottles and raid the candy counter of the local dime store. Or maybe drop-in on someone's big sister working at the doughnut shop or the taco stand, perhaps sharing ice-cream or a cold soda. This album is simply titled "singles" and you could trace the climb of most of these songs all over the top `40' charts when they were released.

Not all the window dressing in the world can alter the reality, that no one else is responsible for your happiness. Sometimes her voice is still singing with my mind, an old lyric from the song (I Need To Be In Love):"I know I ask perfection of a quiet and perfect world, and fool enough to think that's what I'll find."

Second, while the supplements to the original 1969-1973 disc are nice, too much is still missing. I don't actually own this. Third, Richard's remixes mean these aren't the original versions. This is the case for three reasons. First, I have already taken the plunge on four other Carpenters hits collections, none of which is completely satisfying. He is a skilled remixer but these are simply not the singles as we heard them on the radio. Fourth, Karen's facial expression on the cover is truly eerie and I can't have it in my home.

This album shortens a car drive when plugged in to the CD player - very nice, but makes me sad to realize that we have lost such a talent.John
